Methodology

Every number on this platform is one of three things: verified, estimated, or unavailable. This page explains exactly what that means and how rankings are computed.

Data sources

  • Official Etsy Open API v3 — our primary and preferred source. Listing search (GET /v3/application/listings/active) provides titles, prices, images, favorites counts (num_favorers), listing type (digital/physical) and shop references. Shop endpoints provide shop names, review averages and — critically — transaction_sold_count, Etsy's own shop-level sales counter. Shop sales figures from this API are verified (first-party from Etsy).
  • Shop sales snapshots — a scheduled job re-fetches shops through the official API and records each shop's sales counter over time. The difference between two snapshots is a real, verified sales delta ("this shop sold +N units in the last 24 hours / 7 days"). This is the most honest velocity signal available for Etsy.
  • Licensed third-party datasets — imported with a field map and labeled estimated unless the source contract guarantees verified numbers.
  • Manual imports — CSV/JSON entered by administrators, labeled according to the confidence the admin assigns.

We do not scrape Etsy pages (Etsy's robots.txt disallows search crawling and we respect it), we do not bypass authentication, CAPTCHAs, or paywalls, and we do not invent sales figures. When no reliable source exists for a metric, the field is NULL — never zero — and the UI says “Not available”.

What Etsy does and does not expose

  • Shop-level sales: verified. Every shop's transaction_sold_count is public via the official API. We show it with a ✓ verified marker.
  • Listing-level sales: unavailable. Etsy does not expose per-listing sales to anyone — not via the API, not on listing pages. Any tool claiming exact per-listing Etsy sales is estimating. We show listing sales as unavailable and never estimate them.
  • Favorites: verified demand signal. num_favorers is exact and public per listing. Favorites growth between snapshots is our listing-level velocity signal.
  • Ratings: shop-level only. Etsy rates shops, not listings. Shop rating and review count appear on shop pages.

Popularity score (v1)

Popularity is a 0–100 composite of public signals, designed for discovery — it is not a sales count and not a revenue estimate.

  • Verified sales — 35% (only when present; min-max normalized — shops have this, listings do not)
  • Favorites count — 25% (min-max normalized)
  • Rating — 15% (rating / 5; applies to shops, not listings)
  • Recency — 15% (exponential decay, 180-day half-life from first discovery, so age alone doesn't win)
  • Snapshot growth — 10% (favorites delta between the last two sync snapshots)

When a signal is missing for an item, it is excluded and the remaining weights renormalize — an item is never penalized by an implicit zero. Scores store their calculation version and update timestamp.

Best sellers & shops selling fast

Etsy never exposes listing-level sales, so listing rankings are explicitly labeled as popularity-based. Shop rankings are different: “Shops selling fast” ranks by measured, verified sales growth — the delta in each shop's own sales counter between API snapshots inside a 24-hour or 7-day window. When a window lacks snapshot history, we fall back to current verified totals and say so.

Trending

Listing trending rankings compare the earliest and latest sync snapshots inside a 1/7/30-day window and rank by measured favorites growth. When fewer than three listings have usable history in a window, the page falls back to a clearly-labeled popularity-based discovery list rather than pretending to measure growth.

Coverage limitations

The dataset covers listings and shops we have discovered through configured keyword searches — not all of Etsy. Category and market insights describe the tracked corpus. Charts show counts of tracked items, and every sync records provenance (source, timestamp, records processed) visible in the admin sync logs.
